Anodizing is the process that changes the way the surface of the metal refracts light, resulting in different colours. An electrical current is applied to the metal and it increases the thickness of the oxide layer on the metal. Titanium body jewelry is anodized to create lots of different, pretty colours. Titanium is a lightweight metal that is ideal for people with concerns about nickel sensitivity. This material can be anodized to create jewelry of different colours without affecting the safety. There are other websites or stores that will sell body jewelry that says “titanium anodized” and have in very small print that it is actually stainless steel with a titanium coating. Titanium jewelry is more costly than stainless steel because most of it is implant-grade, as it is frequently used in medicine/dentistry. Selling the titanium coated jewelry makes people think that they are getting a deal on solid titanium. Rest assured we use only the highest quality titanium. Look for implant certified titanium (Ti6Al4V ELI) that is ASTM F136 compliant or ISO 5832-3 compliant, or commercially pure titanium that is ASTM F67 compliant.
